Intelligent practice

The short game secrets concept is simple: "See it, feel it, play it".  If you can land the ball where you want and predict how it will react once it lands then you can play any short game shot you desire.  In order to achieve this and maximize your scoring potential you need to have a full understanding of 3 key components:

What the pros know that you don't...

1.  Impact

All great short game players from Seve Ballesterios to Tiger Woods understand how the club contacts the ball for the type of shot they are playing.  Whether it is a high lob shot from a soggy wet lie or a running shot from a tightly cut fairway, understanding impact will allow you to choose the optimum loft, to set the club correctly and get the body in the best position to play shots successfully.  It is also essential to learn how lie and ground conditions effect impact and how this influences the reaction of the golf ball.  Once you understand impact you are ready for the next stage...

2.  Setting the club:

This involves setting the sole of the club correctly for the type for lie, aiming the face to your chosen landing spot and using the right amount of shaft lean.  These elements are key to achieving consistent and predictable results as they allow you to control spin;

If you can control spin,

you can control the golf ball...

The loft of the club face and how the shaft leans in relation to the target both have a significant effect on the trajectory and spin rate of short game shots.  These factors will ultimately decide the carry and roll percentages i.e. how far you carry the ball and how quickly it will stop.  short game secrets will teach you how to influence these elements so you can ultimately land the ball where you want to and predict how it will react once it lands... a very satisfying combination!

Having set the club correctly for the type of impact you want to acheive, you are ready for the last key component...

3.  Body Position

The body position at address should be as close to the body position at impact as possible.  This will help to keep the club, hands, arms and body connected and in stay in sequence through the movement.  Many of us have been taught to play short game shots with an open stance i.e. to have the body aiming left of the line the ball should start on.  The problem with playing shots with an open body position is the condradtiction between body alignment and club face alignment.  This condradiction will encourage the natural path of the club to come across the ball, meaning the club face cannot stay square to the path.  If it does the ball will likely  start and finish left of the target.  To compensate the hands may try to manipulate, keeping the face open to the path.  This will introduce side spin, resulting in inconsistent and unpredictable results.

The short game secrets method allows you to play chip and pitch shots keeping the club face square to the path, allowing the club, hands, arms and body to stay connected and in sequence.  Playing shots this way will improve spin control as the ball will spin straight back up the club face and either stop dead on the green or bounce and roll straight forward toward the target as there will be no sidespin.  When playing lob shots sidespin can be significantly reduced by only slightly opening the face and keeping the shaft neutral, therefore limiting how much the swing path will come across the ball.

Make it happen today!

The knowledge of impact, understanding how to set the club and starting with the right body shape will enable you to play predictable and repeatable shots.  Once these elements are in place you can clear your mind of technique and focus on seeing the shot, feeling the movement and putting that feeling on the ball...
